This iconic wall has ties to even more iconic history. The leather belt wall in our library is a one-of-a-kind piece designed and created locally. The stunning art is a tribute to one of Edmonton's proudest pieces of history which we just have to keep alive! The Great Western Garment Company, often referred to as GWG, opened in 1911 and quickly became a place where women could thrive in the workplace. The textile factory grew over the years thanks to their innovative designs, and predominantly became known for their signature blue jeans, worn of course, with a black leather belt. It was the original Edmonton look. After being bought by Levi's in the 60s, they eventually did close in 2004, but forever are champions for Edmonton women, and fashion legends.
