Giving Back: Global Ties, Local Roots

When we say we celebrate local at Renaissance, we really mean celebrating every aspect of being a part of such an amazing community. Here at Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel we have the pleasure to offer our guests a true Marriott experience, linked to the most powerful hospitality network in the world, but we’re also proud to be locally owned in Edmonton by Platinum Investments.

A key part of our culture at Platinum Investments and Renaissance Edmonton is giving back to the community that has given us so much opportunity to succeed. We gets hands on. You’ll find us everywhere from large corporate sponsorships to everyday acts from our ambassadors. We take pride that all our staff enjoy giving back through toonie jean days on Fridays in support of the Miracle Children’s Network. We’re proud that our ownership is excited to back major events like The Porcelain Prison Project to help build sanitation for schools in Mozambique.

This Fall we’re excited to announce that we’re major sponsors for three events: Robust Reds for the Centre for Autism Canada, Dreams Take Flight, and Under The Umbrella for Win House.

Robust Reds is an annual event hosted by The Gateway Rotary Club of Edmonton. Last year was the first year Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel hosted and sponsored the event, and despite hesitation to move the event further outside the city, the wine tasting was a complete sell-out success. This year the event will be held on Friday September 28th.

We are excited to officially announce Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel as the host hotel for Dreams Take Flight beginning this September. This is something near and dear to Renaissance GM David Keam who has supported the organization personally for years. The annual flight requires a lot of help to take hospitalized or sick kids to DisneyLand for a day and David has joined the trip as a chaperone a few times. We have donated to Dreams Take Flight through donated room nights in the past, but we’re excited to finally play a larger, more meaningful role in the amazing initiative. While the gala is not until May 2019, we begin with the Meet & Greet event September 9th.

Our sponsorship of the WIN House Under The Umbrella gala is unchartered territory for the Renaissance. The organization works with women and children escaping unsafe situations, giving them a roof over their head and the opportunity and resources needed for them to have their own independence. We can’t wait to help make a difference in the lives of women right here in Edmonton as a sponsor and host for their gala on November 3rd.

2018 is gearing up to be one of our most exciting years of giving back! So far we’ve had a few other events that we’ve had a lot of fun supporting.

On March 9th we hosted the wildest and wackiest fundraiser to help the Gateway Rotary Club of Edmonton raise $35,000 to build proper sanitation for a school in Mozambique. The fundraiser involved 10 prominent Edmontonians sitting on toilets in a jail’n’bail fashion until they raised their goal. The best part? It took place right in the Arcade Lobby of the Renaissance. I goal was reached within 4 hours!

Our Mother’s Day Run for the Stollery Children’s Hospital sponsorship not only included handing out breakfast sandwiches to racers, but we had an ambassador from every department of the hotel participating in the run. We won’t say who won (they’re already too proud of it), but it was such a fun way to give back and really feel a part of the Edmonton Community.

More recently we participated in the Miracle Children’s Network Root Beer Float Day. Marriott is a major sponsor for the Miracle Children’s Network year round. The organization links children’s hospitals around North America, but funds raised always support the local hospital, which is the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Root Beer Floats were available all day to guests, staff, and passerbys based on donation to support the Miracle Children’s Network.

Whether it’s our ongoing projects, offsite sponsorship, or hosted galas, we look forward to contributing as much as we can to the local and global community!
